Our History

Our roots go back to the inception of American Republic Insurance Company in 1929. The company was founded by Watson Powell, a pioneer in the health and accident insurance business. The company began with 200 charter policies. From the beginning, the company was dedicated to providing personal insurance services to individuals and families at the lowest possible cost.

  • Past

    • Our roots go back to the inception of American Republic Insurance Company in 1929. The company was founded by Watson Powell, a pioneer in the health and accident insurance business. The company began with 200 charter policies. From the beginning, the company was dedicated to providing personal insurance services to individuals and families at the lowest possible cost.

    • Medico Insurance Company was founded in 1930 as a health and accident association under the title Central Catholic Casualty Company with home offices in Columbus, Nebraska.   Their mission was to help protect customers with quality products and personalized service that helps ensure peace of mind and quality of life.

    • American Republic and Medico merged in 2012 under American Enterprise

  • Present

    American Enterprise Group, Inc., is a holding company in the American Enterprise Mutual Holding Company system. American Enterprise is based in Des Moines, Iowa and employs approximately 500 people in our Des Moines, Iowa, Omaha, Nebraska, and Ogden, Utah offices.

     

    American Enterprise has seven insurance company subsidiaries under the American Republic®, Great Western®, and Medico® brands. These companies are licensed in 49 states plus the District of Columbia. The companies distribute Medicare supplement, dental, hospital indemnity, short-term care, critical illness, pre-need, and final expense insurance products. These products are marketed through various distribution channels including independent agents, career agents, direct marketing, funeral homes, and distribution partners.

    • Great Western Insurance Company, established in 1983 and acquired by merger in 2017.

    • Medico Corp Life Insurance Company, established in 1960 and acquired by merger in 2004.

    • Medico Insurance Company, established in 1930 and acquired by merger in 2012.

    • Medico Life and Health Insurance Company, established in 1935 and acquired by merger in 2013.

    • American Republic Insurance Services – Life and health insurance planning specialists who work face‐to‐face with clients to serve the needs of the market through advice, service and products.

    • Americare Group – Licensed representatives who work with clients over the telephone and internet to assist them in finding and purchasing products that best fit their needs.

    • Great Western Insurance Company – Funeral home partners and their agents work directly with customers to assist them with their pre-need and final expense insurance solutions.

    • Medico – More than 28,000  independent brokers and agents who present our products to their clients.
